Repointing & Brick Repair
Deteriorated mortar joints are one of the most common causes of water ingress and structural damage in brick buildings across Suffolk and Norfolk. Doughty Construction Ltd carries out repointing and brick repair on everything from domestic homes to older commercial buildings, using the right mortar specification for the wall in question.
How we work
Repointing starts with raking out the old mortar to the correct depth — typically 15–20mm — without damaging the brick arrises. The mortar specification matters greatly: using a cement-rich mix on a lime-mortared historic wall will trap moisture and cause brick face spalling. We assess the wall type and age before recommending a mix, and where buildings are listed or in conservation areas, we follow the appropriate historic-environment guidance.
What this covers
- Raking out and repointing of deteriorated mortar joints
- Lime mortar repointing on period and listed buildings
- Cement and hydraulic-lime mix repointing on post-war buildings
- Localised and whole-elevation repointing programmes
- Individual brick replacement and crack stitching
- Repointing of chimney stacks, parapets and exposed garden walls
